Cayucas

Cayucas is an American indie pop and surf-pop band formed in Santa Monica, California, by twin brothers Zach Yudin and Ben Yudin. The project originally began in 2011 under the name Oregon Bike Trails, when Zach Yudin started posting home-recorded songs online that blended beachy guitar pop, lo-fi production, and nostalgic California imagery. In 2012, the project evolved into a full band and adopted the name “Cayucas,” inspired by the coastal town of Cayucos, California.

Cayucas quickly became associated with the wave of sunny, melody-driven indie pop that drew comparisons to contemporary bands like Vampire Weekend and classic surf-pop acts such as The Beach Boys. Their sound mixes jangly guitars, tropical rhythms, layered harmonies, and lyrics centered on youth, beaches, romance, and summertime nostalgia. Critics frequently described the music as “California coastal” pop with a relaxed, feel-good atmosphere.

The band signed with Secretly Canadian in 2012 and released their debut album, Bigfoot, in 2013. Produced by Richard Swift, the album featured standout tracks like “High School Lover,” “Cayucos,” and “East Coast Girl.” The record earned attention from outlets including NPR and KCRW and helped establish the band within the indie festival and college-radio scene.

The group has continued evolving with later releases including Dancing at the Blue Lagoon, Real Life, Blue Summer, and Hangin’ on the Westside. Across these albums, Zach Yudin remained the creative center of the project, drawing inspiration from vintage pop, surf culture, and memories of Southern California life.

Cayucas has built a loyal indie following through their upbeat songwriting, nostalgic themes, and summery live performances. Their music is often associated with carefree coastal imagery and has become a staple of modern surf-inspired indie pop.
