 | Freddie McGregor
Freddie began his career in 1963, at the age of seven with The Clarandonians and hasn't stopped singing since. A protégé of Coxson Dodd, Freddie McGregor stepped in as lead vocalist and songwriter for the Generation Gap and Soul Syndicate at the legendary Studio One. Later that decade, he teamed up with guitarist Earl Chinna Smith to release a slew of classic singles including "Mark of the Beast" and "Natural Collie." |
|
1979 kicked off his solo career with the album "Mr. McGregor" (Tuff Gong) featuring culturally influenced tracks with production from Niney Observer. "Bobby Babylon" (Studio One) followed as a masterpiece with an entire decade of unreleased material produced by Dodd. The early 1980's proved an era of dramatic change in the direction of reggae music, with the death of Bob Marley in 1981 and the newfound sound of dancehall on the brink of popularity. Nonetheless, Freddie's greatest success came at this time with the 1982 release of "Big Ship," which launched him into icon contention alongside reggae luminaries Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown. |
|
In 1986 Freddie found himself of international fame when "Push Come to Shove" and the cover of Main Ingredient's "Just Don't Want to be Lonely" topped the UK charts, prompting Polydor to enter Freddie into a major label contract. Fed up with industry politics, he severed ties to set up his own label and production company in 1989, named after his hallmark record "Big Ship." |

After years of creating only quality music, Mr. McGregor has graced the stage for world leaders, President Mandela and Prince Charles. A singer/songwriter of tremendous consistency, at home with both roots and culture and lovers rock, Freddie McGregor remains a highly celebrated artist. His latest craftsmanship can be heard on the recently released "Anything For You" (VP). His vast publishing catalog, Big Ship Music (ASCAP), is administered by The Royalty Network worldwide. |
